Hello from Remy the Ruler! πŸ‘‹

Hi there! I'm Remy the Ruler πŸ“ β€” and I love measuring things!

Do you ever wonder how long a pencil is? Or how tall your favourite toy stands? Or how wide your book is?

That's what measuring is all about! Measuring helps us find out exactly how long something is.

We use special tools to measure. The most popular one is the ruler β€” that flat stick with numbers on it!

Ready to learn how to use me? Let's go! πŸš€

πŸ“ Remy the Ruler!
πŸ“ Did You Know?
Long ago, people measured things using their body parts β€” like the length of a foot 🦢 or the width of a thumb! But everyone's body is different, so a "foot" wasn't the same for everyone. That's why we invented rulers β€” so everyone measures the same way!
02
The Basics

What Is Length? πŸ€”

Length is how long something is β€” from one end to the other end!

You can measure the length of lots of things:
πŸ–ŠοΈ A pencil
πŸ“š A book
πŸ› A worm
πŸ›οΈ Your bed
😊 Even your smile!

We measure length using units. The most common units are centimetres (cm) and metres (m).

Short things use centimetres β€” like a pencil. Really long things use metres β€” like a swimming pool!

Length of pencil! Book Width of book! Length of worm!

How To Measure

3 Easy Steps to Measure! 🎯

Measuring with a ruler is easy if you follow these 3 steps! Tap each step to see it in action!

1Line up the zero
β†’
2Keep it straight
β†’
3Read the number
Step 1: Place the ruler so the 0 mark is exactly at the START of the object!
⚠️ Common Mistake!
Never start measuring from the edge of the ruler β€” always start from the 0 mark! On some rulers the 0 is a little bit away from the edge. Always look for the zero!

Units

Centimetres & Metres πŸ“

We measure in centimetres (cm) for small things and metres (m) for big things!

πŸ”’ 100 centimetres = 1 metre

Imagine 100 ants lined up in a row β€” that would be about 1 metre! πŸœΓ—100

Your ruler shows centimetres. For metres, you'd use a measuring tape β€” the long stretchy one!

Here's a trick to remember:
cm = small things (pencil, eraser, leaf)
m = big things (door, car, classroom)

Pencil β‰ˆ 15 cm Door β‰ˆ 2 m 2 m 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜 = 10 cm 100 ants = 1 m!

Reading Between the Lines! πŸ”Ž

The big lines on a ruler show centimetres. But there are also smaller lines between them β€” those are half centimetres and millimetres! Click the ruler to zoom in!

Estimate!

Guess First, Measure Second! πŸ€”

Before you measure, it's fun to estimate β€” that means make a smart guess!

Remy has a secret trick: he knows that his thumb is about 1 cm wide! So he uses his thumb to make a rough guess before measuring.

How to estimate:
1️⃣ Look at the object
2️⃣ Think: How many thumbs wide is it?
3️⃣ That's your estimate in cm!
4️⃣ Then measure to check!

Good estimates help you check if your measurement makes sense. If you measure a pencil and get "52 cm" β€” that's too big! Something went wrong!

β‰ˆ 1 cm Eraser About 4–5 thumbs! Estimate: ~4-5 cm

Compare

Longer, Shorter, Same! ↔️

After measuring, we can compare lengths!

πŸ”΅ Longer = bigger number
🟠 Shorter = smaller number
🟒 Same = equal numbers

Example: A pencil is 8 cm. A crayon is 6 cm.
The pencil is longer because 8 > 6!

Top Tip: Line both objects up at the same starting point β€” then it's easy to see which sticks out further on the right!

Object A (8 cm) 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 8 cm Object B (6 cm) 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 6 cm πŸ† A is LONGER! 8 cm > 6 cm
πŸ† Order from shortest to longest!
