πŸͺ Nouns & Verbs β€” The Star Duo!

Every sentence needs TWO stars: a noun and a verb! 🌟🌟

Nouns are NAMING words. They tell us WHO or WHAT:

πŸ”Ή Common nouns: dog, school, city, book

πŸ”Ή Proper nouns: Australia, Monday, Sarah (start with a capital!)

πŸ”Ή Collective nouns: a flock of birds, a team of players

Verbs are ACTION or BEING words. They tell us what happens:

πŸ”Ή Action verbs: run, jump, eat, write, sing

πŸ”Ή Being verbs: is, am, are, was, were

πŸ”Ή Helping verbs: can, will, have, should

Together they form the sentence engine: "The dog (noun) runs (verb)."

🎨 Adjectives & Adverbs β€” The Decorators!

Adjectives describe NOUNS β€” they add colour to your writing! 🎨

πŸ”Ή The big, fluffy dog sat on the red mat.

πŸ”Ή She ate a delicious, warm pie.

Ask: "What kind? Which one? How many?" β†’ that's an adjective!

Adverbs describe VERBS β€” they tell us HOW, WHEN, or WHERE! ⚑

πŸ”Ή HOW: She ran quickly. He spoke softly.

πŸ”Ή WHEN: I'll go tomorrow. She arrived early.

πŸ”Ή WHERE: Look outside. Come here.

Tip: Many adverbs end in -ly (slow β†’ slowly, happy β†’ happily) but not all!

❓ "What kind?" = adjective
❓ "How?" = adverb
πŸ’‘ Gigi's Tip!
In challenge questions, you might be asked to identify parts of speech in a sentence. Remember: adjectives go with NOUNS, adverbs go with VERBS. "The tall girl ran quickly." β†’ tall = adjective, quickly = adverb! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

⏰ Tenses β€” Time Travel with Words!

Tenses tell us WHEN something happens! It's like time travel! β°πŸ•°οΈ

Past Tense = already happened (yesterday, last week):

πŸ”Ή Regular: walk β†’ walked, jump β†’ jumped

πŸ”Ή Irregular: go β†’ went, eat β†’ ate, run β†’ ran, see β†’ saw

Present Tense = happening NOW:

πŸ”Ή I walk. She walks. They play.

Future Tense = will happen later:

πŸ”Ή I will go. She will eat. We will play.

Past Continuous = was happening (in the middle of):

πŸ”Ή I was running. They were singing.

⏰
Time Travel!
⬅️ Past: walked, went, ate
⏺️ Present: walk, walks, play
➑️ Future: will walk, will play
πŸ”„ Past continuous: was walking
πŸ“– Fun Fact!
English has over 200 irregular past tense verbs! The trickiest ones to remember: go β†’ went, buy β†’ bought, think β†’ thought, catch β†’ caught, teach β†’ taught. They don't follow the "-ed" rule! 🀯

Planet 4

🀝 Subject-Verb Agreement!

The subject and verb must AGREE β€” they must match! 🀝

Rule: Singular subject β†’ singular verb. Plural subject β†’ plural verb.

πŸ”Ή The dog runs. (1 dog = singular)

πŸ”Ή The dogs run. (many dogs = plural)

πŸ”Ή She is happy. / They are happy.

πŸ”Ή He was tired. / We were tired.

Tricky cases:

πŸ”Ή Everyone is here. (everyone = singular!)

πŸ”Ή Nobody knows the answer. (nobody = singular!)

πŸ”Ή Each of the students has a book. (each = singular!)

Remember: "Everyone", "nobody", and "each" are always SINGULAR β€” even though they sound like they mean many people! 🀯

🀝
Matching Partners!
1️⃣ 1 subject β†’ runs, is, was
πŸ‘₯ Many subjects β†’ run, are, were
⚠️ everyone = singular!
⚠️ nobody, each = singular!
πŸ’‘ Gigi's Tip!
Challenge questions love testing subject-verb agreement with tricky subjects! If you see "everyone", "nobody", "somebody", or "each" β€” use the SINGULAR verb (is, was, has, runs). They may SOUND plural but they're not! 🎯

πŸ“’ Four Types of Sentences!

There are FOUR types of sentences, and each one has a different job! πŸ“’

TypeJobEnds WithExample
Statement (declarative)Tells us somethingFull stop .The sky is blue.
Question (interrogative)Asks somethingQuestion mark ?Is the sky blue?
Exclamation (exclamatory)Shows strong feelingExclamation mark !What a beautiful sky!
Command (imperative)Tells someone to do something. or !Look at the sky.

πŸ”Ή Statements are the most common β€” they share information.

πŸ”Ή Questions start with who, what, where, when, why, how, is, are, do, did, can, will.

πŸ”Ή Exclamations often start with "What a..." or "How..."

πŸ”Ή Commands start with a VERB (Go! Sit down. Please open your books.)

✏️ Punctuation β€” The Traffic Signs!

Punctuation marks are like traffic signs for reading β€” they tell us when to stop, pause, or get excited! 🚦

Full Stop (.) β†’ STOP. End of a sentence.

πŸ”Ή The dog sat on the mat.

Question Mark (?) β†’ A question is being asked!

πŸ”Ή Where is the dog?

Exclamation Mark (!) β†’ Strong feeling or surprise!

πŸ”Ή Watch out! That was amazing!

Capital Letters β†’ Start of a sentence, proper nouns, and "I".

πŸ”Ή My friend Sarah and I went to Sydney on Monday.

✨ Commas & Apostrophes β€” Superpowers!

These two tiny marks have BIG superpowers! ✨

MarkSuperpowerExamples
Comma in lists ,Separates items in a listI bought apples, bananas, and oranges.
Comma after openersPause after time wordsFirst, we ate lunch. Next, we played.
Apostrophe for contractions 'Squeezes two words into onedon't (do not), can't (cannot), it's (it is)
Apostrophe for possession 'Shows who owns somethingthe dog's bone, Sarah's bag

⚠️ Watch out: its vs it's is the TRICKIEST!

πŸ”Ή it's = "it is" (contraction): It's raining.

πŸ”Ή its = belongs to "it" (possession): The dog wagged its tail.

Memory trick: If you can replace it with "it is" β†’ use it's. Otherwise β†’ its!

πŸ“– Skills Alert!
Challenge questions love testing apostrophes! Remember: contractions (can't, don't, it's) use apostrophes where letters are MISSING. Possession (the cat's toy) uses an apostrophe before the S to show who OWNS it! 🎯

πŸ’¬ Speech Marks β€” Talking on Paper!

Speech marks (quotation marks) show us the EXACT words someone says! πŸ’¬

The rules:

1️⃣ Put speech marks around the spoken words:

πŸ”Ή "Hello!" said the boy.

2️⃣ Punctuation goes INSIDE the speech marks:

πŸ”Ή "Where are you going?" asked Mum.

3️⃣ Use a comma before or after the speech:

πŸ”Ή The teacher said, "Please sit down."

πŸ”Ή "I love maths," said Liam.

4️⃣ New speaker = new line!

πŸ”Ή "I'm hungry," said Tom.

πŸ”Ή "Me too!" replied Sarah.
