Meet Miko the Market Ninja! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Welcome to the bustling Fraction & Money Market! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm Miko the Market Ninja, and I help shoppers, bakers, and stall owners use maths every day.

Today you will learn two very useful skills:

๐Ÿ• Fractions to describe parts of a whole

๐Ÿ’ต Money change to shop like a clever customer

We will use number lines, pizza slices, coins, and shop problems to train your brain.

Ready to share fairly and spend wisely? Let's go! โœจ

๐Ÿ• What Is a Unit Fraction?

A fraction shows part of a whole.

A unit fraction has 1 on the top: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8.

The bottom number tells how many equal parts the whole is split into.

So:

๐Ÿฐ 1/2 means 1 out of 2 equal parts

๐Ÿซ 1/4 means 1 out of 4 equal parts

๐Ÿ• 1/8 means 1 out of 8 equal parts

If the parts are not equal, it is not a correct fraction picture.

๐Ÿ•
Equal Parts Matter
1/2 Two equal parts
1/4 Four equal parts
1/8 Eight equal parts

๐Ÿ“ Fractions on a Number Line

A number line helps us see where fractions belong between 0 and 1.

1/2 sits right in the middle.

1/4 is smaller, so it sits halfway between 0 and 1/2.

1/8 is even smaller, so it sits closer to 0.

From smallest to largest, the order is:

1/8, 1/4, 1/2

On a number line, bigger fractions are farther to the right.

Number Line Landmarks
FractionWhere it sits
1/8Very close to 0
1/4Quarter of the way to 1
1/2Exactly halfway
๐Ÿ’ก Miko's Number Line Trick
If the bottom number is bigger, each piece is smaller. That is why 1/8 is smaller than 1/4 and 1/2.

๐Ÿ’ต Australian Money Refresher

Before we calculate change, let's remember Australian money values.

Coins: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2

Notes: $5, $10, $20, $50, $100

Money amounts always use dollars and cents.

For example:

$3.50 means 3 dollars and 50 cents.

$7.05 means 7 dollars and 5 cents.

Always write cents with two digits.

$ Dollars go before the number
.00 Two digits for cents
๐Ÿช™ 100c = $1

๐Ÿ›’ Calculating Change

Change is the money you get back after paying.

Change = amount paid - cost

Example: A toy costs $4.75. You pay with $5.00.

Count up:

4.75 โ†’ 5.00 is 25c

So the change is $0.25.

Another example: A book costs $6.40. You pay with $10.00.

10.00 - 6.40 = $3.60.

๐Ÿงพ
Two Ways to Find Change
โž– Subtract cost from amount paid

๐Ÿ’ก Start with cents first
โœ… Check if the answer makes sense
๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz!

A drink costs $2.80. You pay with $5.00. How much change do you get?

Skill 2

๐Ÿง  Counting Up for Change

The count up strategy is very helpful in shops.

Example: Cost = $3.65, paid = $5.00

$3.65 + 5c = $3.70

$3.70 + 30c = $4.00

$4.00 + $1.00 = $5.00

Total change = $1.35

This method helps you see each step clearly.

๐Ÿ’ก Market Tip
When counting up, aim for a friendly number like the next 10 cents, then the next whole dollar, then the final amount.

๐ŸŽฏ Fraction Mission

A fruit tart is cut into 8 equal slices.

If you take 1 slice, that is 1/8.

On a number line from 0 to 1, 1/8 sits closest to 0.

If another tart is cut into 4 equal slices, 1 slice is 1/4.

Because 1/4 is bigger than 1/8, it sits farther to the right.

And 1/2 is bigger still, because half of something is a large piece.

โœ… Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Forgetting fractions need equal parts.

Mistake 2: Thinking 1/8 is bigger because 8 is bigger. Bigger bottom number means smaller pieces.

Mistake 3: Subtracting the wrong way when finding change.

Always do amount paid - cost, not cost - amount paid.

Mistake 4: Dropping the zero in money. Write $2.20, not $2.2.

๐Ÿ’ก Final Check
If your change is more than the amount you paid, or your fraction order puts 1/2 before 1/8 as the smallest, stop and re-check. A quick reasonableness check catches lots of mistakes.
