Welcome!

Meet Shaper the Explorer! ๐Ÿงญ

G'day, young mathematician! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐ŸŒŸ

I'm Shaper the Explorer, and I love discovering patterns, shapes, and measurements all around us! ๐Ÿงญ๐Ÿ“

Did you know that maths is EVERYWHERE? From the clock on the wall to the shapes of buildings โ€” it's all maths! ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Today you'll master SIX explorer missions:

๐Ÿ• Fractions & Decimals โ€” splitting things into parts

๐Ÿ”ข Patterns & Algebra โ€” what comes next?

๐Ÿ“ Length, Area & Perimeter โ€” measuring space

โฐ Time โ€” reading clocks and calendars

๐Ÿ”บ 2D Shapes โ€” flat shapes all around

๐ŸงŠ 3D Objects โ€” solid shapes you can hold

Mission 1

๐Ÿ• Fractions โ€” Sharing Fairly!

A fraction is a part of a whole! When you share a pizza equally, you're using fractions! ๐Ÿ•

The TOP number is the numerator โ€” how many parts you HAVE.

The BOTTOM number is the denominator โ€” how many EQUAL parts in total.

Common fractions:

๐Ÿ”น 1/2 = one half (1 out of 2 equal parts)

๐Ÿ”น 1/4 = one quarter (1 out of 4 equal parts)

๐Ÿ”น 3/4 = three quarters (3 out of 4 parts)

๐Ÿ”น 1/3 = one third (1 out of 3 equal parts)

Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different but are the SAME amount:

๐Ÿ”น 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 (they're ALL one half!)

๐Ÿ•

Mission 1

๐Ÿ”ข Decimals โ€” The Dot That Matters!

Decimals are another way to write fractions! They use a decimal point (dot).

The number AFTER the dot shows parts of a whole:

๐Ÿ”น 0.1 = one tenth = 1/10

๐Ÿ”น 0.5 = five tenths = 5/10 = one half!

๐Ÿ”น 0.25 = twenty-five hundredths = 1/4

๐Ÿ”น 0.75 = seventy-five hundredths = 3/4

Think of money! ๐Ÿ’ฐ

๐Ÿ”น $1.50 = one dollar and 50 cents (half a dollar!)

๐Ÿ”น $0.25 = 25 cents (a quarter of a dollar!)

Decimals and fractions are the SAME thing, just written differently! ๐Ÿคฏ

๐Ÿ”ข๐Ÿ’ฐ
Decimal World!
๐ŸŸฐ 0.5 = 1/2 = one half
๐ŸŸฐ 0.25 = 1/4 = one quarter
๐ŸŸฐ 0.1 = 1/10 = one tenth
๐Ÿ’ฐ Money uses decimals!
๐Ÿ’ก Shaper's Tip!
Challenge questions often ask you to put decimals in order. Remember: 0.5 is BIGGER than 0.25 (even though 5 looks smaller than 25!). Think of money โ€” 50 cents is more than 25 cents! ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Mission 2

๐Ÿ”ข Patterns & Algebra โ€” What Comes Next?

Patterns are sequences that follow a rule! ๐Ÿงฉ

Number patterns:

๐Ÿ”น 2, 4, 6, 8, ? โ†’ Rule: +2 โ†’ Answer: 10

๐Ÿ”น 5, 10, 15, 20, ? โ†’ Rule: +5 โ†’ Answer: 25

๐Ÿ”น 100, 90, 80, 70, ? โ†’ Rule: โˆ’10 โ†’ Answer: 60

Number sentences (equations):

๐Ÿ”น 7 + __ = 12 โ†’ Think: 12 โˆ’ 7 = 5

๐Ÿ”น __ ร— 3 = 15 โ†’ Think: 15 รท 3 = 5

Balance / Equivalence:

๐Ÿ”น 7 + 3 = __ + 5 โ†’ Both sides must equal 10, so __ = 5

Finding the pattern rule is like being a detective! ๐Ÿ”

Mission 3

๐Ÿ“ Length, Area & Perimeter!

Time to measure! Grab your ruler and let's explore! ๐Ÿ“

ConceptWhat It MeansHow to Find It
Length ๐Ÿ“How long something isMeasure with a ruler! Units: cm, m, km
Perimeter ๐ŸƒThe distance AROUND a shapeAdd ALL the sides together
Area ๐ŸŸฆThe space INSIDE a shapeCount the squares, or Length ร— Width

Perimeter example: A rectangle with sides 5cm and 3cm:

๐Ÿ”น Perimeter = 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 cm

Area example: A rectangle 5cm long and 3cm wide:

๐Ÿ”น Area = 5 ร— 3 = 15 cmยฒ (square centimetres)

Remember: Perimeter = AROUND (fence) ๐Ÿƒ, Area = INSIDE (carpet) ๐ŸŸฆ

๐Ÿ“– Fun Fact!
An easy way to remember the difference: Perimeter = think "perimeter fence" (goes AROUND). Area = think "area rug" (covers the INSIDE). Challenge questions love asking about both! ๐ŸŽฏ

Mission 4

โฐ Time โ€” Reading Clocks!

Time is everywhere โ€” let's master it! โฐ

Analogue clocks have two hands:

๐Ÿ”น Short hand = HOUR (moves slowly)

๐Ÿ”น Long hand = MINUTES (moves faster)

Key times to know:

๐Ÿ”น O'clock = long hand on 12

๐Ÿ”น Half past = long hand on 6 (30 minutes)

๐Ÿ”น Quarter past = long hand on 3 (15 minutes)

๐Ÿ”น Quarter to = long hand on 9 (45 minutes)

Digital clocks show time with numbers:

๐Ÿ”น 3:00 = three o'clock

๐Ÿ”น 3:30 = half past three

๐Ÿ”น 3:15 = quarter past three

๐Ÿ”น 3:45 = quarter to four

โฐ๐Ÿ•

๐Ÿ• Long hand = minutes
๐ŸŒ… AM = morning
๐ŸŒ™ PM = afternoon/night
๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz!

p.7
Mission 4

โฑ๏ธ Elapsed Time & Calendars!

Elapsed time means "How long did something take?" โฑ๏ธ

๐Ÿ”น If a movie starts at 2:00 and ends at 4:30, it was 2 hours and 30 minutes long.

๐Ÿ”น If school starts at 9:00 and lunch is at 12:30, that's 3 hours 30 minutes.

Trick: Count forward from the start time!

Calendars:

๐Ÿ”น 7 days in a week

๐Ÿ”น 52 weeks in a year

๐Ÿ”น 12 months in a year

๐Ÿ”น 365 days in a year (366 in a leap year!)

Days in each month:

๐Ÿ”น 30 days: April, June, September, November

๐Ÿ”น 31 days: Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec

๐Ÿ”น 28 or 29 days: February

๐Ÿ“…โฑ๏ธ
Time Facts!

๐Ÿ“† 7 days = 1 week
๐Ÿ“… 12 months = 1 year
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ 365 days = 1 year
๐Ÿ’ก Shaper's Tip!
Challenge questions often test elapsed time! Use the "count forward" method: If it starts at 10:45 and takes 1 hour 30 minutes, count: 10:45 โ†’ 11:45 (+1hr) โ†’ 12:15 (+30min). Answer: 12:15! โฐ

Mission 5

๐Ÿฆ‹ Symmetry & Angles!

Symmetry means one half is a mirror image of the other! ๐Ÿฆ‹

A line of symmetry divides a shape into two matching halves.

๐Ÿ”น A square has 4 lines of symmetry

๐Ÿ”น A rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry

๐Ÿ”น A circle has infinite lines of symmetry!

๐Ÿ”น A butterfly is symmetrical! ๐Ÿฆ‹

Angles measure how much something turns:

๐Ÿ”น Right angle = 90ยฐ (like a corner of a book ๐Ÿ“–)

๐Ÿ”น Acute angle = less than 90ยฐ (sharp and pointy!)

๐Ÿ”น Obtuse angle = more than 90ยฐ (wide and open)

๐Ÿ”น Straight angle = 180ยฐ (a flat line)

๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ“

๐Ÿชž Symmetry = mirror halves
๐Ÿ“ Right angle = 90ยฐ
๐Ÿ“Œ Acute = less than 90ยฐ
๐Ÿ“ Obtuse = more than 90ยฐ
๐Ÿ“– Fun Fact!
You can check for right angles using the corner of a piece of paper! If the corner fits perfectly, it's a right angle (90ยฐ). Challenge questions often ask you to identify angle types! ๐Ÿ“

Mission 6

๐Ÿ”ฒ Nets โ€” Unfolding 3D Objects!

A net is what a 3D object looks like when you UNFOLD it flat! ๐Ÿ”ฒ

Imagine cutting open a cardboard box and laying it flat โ€” that's a net! ๐Ÿ“ฆโœ‚๏ธ

Common nets:

๐Ÿ”น Cube net = 6 squares joined together (looks like a cross!)

๐Ÿ”น Rectangular prism net = 6 rectangles

๐Ÿ”น Cylinder net = 2 circles + 1 rectangle

๐Ÿ”น Cone net = 1 circle + 1 fan shape

๐Ÿ”น Pyramid net = 1 square + 4 triangles

Challenge tip: When you see a net, imagine FOLDING it up in your mind. Which faces would touch? Where would the edges meet? ๐Ÿง
