๐Ÿ“Œ Finding the Main Idea

Every story or paragraph has a main idea โ€” it's the most important thing the writer wants you to know!

Think of it like this: if a story were a pizza ๐Ÿ•, the main idea is the base. Everything else โ€” the toppings โ€” are just details that support it!

Here's how to find the main idea:

1๏ธโƒฃ Ask yourself: "What is this mostly about?"

2๏ธโƒฃ Look at the first sentence โ€” it often tells you!

3๏ธโƒฃ Check if the other sentences support that idea.

๐Ÿ•
Main Idea = Pizza Base!
๐Ÿ• Main idea = the BASE
๐Ÿง€ Details = the TOPPINGS
โ“ Ask: "What is this mostly about?"
๐Ÿ‘€ Check the first sentence!
๐Ÿ’ก Lexie's Tip!
If you can explain what a paragraph is about in ONE sentence, you've found the main idea! Try it: "This paragraph is mainly about ___."

๐Ÿ“Œ Let's Practice โ€” Main Idea!

๐Ÿ“„ Read This Passage:

Dolphins are amazing swimmers. They can leap high out of the water and spin in the air. Dolphins use clicking sounds to talk to each other. They live together in groups called pods and help each other find food. Baby dolphins stay close to their mothers for several years.

Skill 1

๐Ÿ“Œ Main Idea vs Details

Now let's learn the difference between the main idea and supporting details!

Main idea = the BIG point (what it's mostly about)

Details = the small facts that help explain it

Look at this example:

๐ŸŽ Main idea: "Eating fruit is good for you."

๐Ÿ“ Detail 1: "Apples have lots of vitamins."

๐Ÿ“ Detail 2: "Bananas give you energy."

๐Ÿ“ Detail 3: "Oranges help you fight colds."

See? The details all support the main idea! ๐ŸŽฏ

๐ŸŽฏ
Main Idea in the Centre!
๐ŸŽฏ Main idea = the bullseye
๐Ÿ“ Details = the rings around it
๐Ÿค” Ask: "Does this fact support the big idea?"
โญ Details give proof & examples
๐Ÿ“– Fun Fact!
In reading challenges, many questions ask you to find the main idea of a paragraph. Now you know exactly how to do it! You're already ahead! ๐ŸŒŸ

Skill 2

๐Ÿ‘ค Characters, Settings & Events

Every story has three important parts. Lexie calls them the Big Three! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ‘ค Characters = the people or animals IN the story (WHO)

๐Ÿก Setting = WHERE and WHEN the story happens

๐Ÿ“… Events = WHAT HAPPENS in the story (the actions!)

When you read, always ask yourself these three questions:

1๏ธโƒฃ WHO is in this story?

2๏ธโƒฃ WHERE and WHEN does it happen?

3๏ธโƒฃ WHAT happens? (First, next, last?)

๐Ÿ‘ค๐Ÿก๐Ÿ“…
The Big Three!
๐Ÿ‘ค Characters = WHO
๐Ÿก Setting = WHERE & WHEN
๐Ÿ“… Events = WHAT HAPPENS
๐Ÿ”ข Events have an ORDER!
๐Ÿ’ก Lexie's Tip!
To remember events in order, use the words: FIRST, NEXT, THEN, FINALLY. These are called sequence words and they'll help you retell any story!

Skill 2

๐Ÿ‘ค Let's Practice โ€” Story Elements!

๐Ÿ“„ Read This Short Story:

One sunny morning, a little girl named Maya found a tiny kitten hiding under a bush in the park. The kitten was shivering and looked hungry. Maya gently picked it up and wrapped it in her scarf. She carried it home and gave it a bowl of warm milk. By evening, the kitten was purring happily in Maya's lap. She decided to name it Biscuit.

Skill 2

๐Ÿ”ข Sequencing โ€” What Happened When?

Great readers can retell a story in the right order. Let's practise with Maya's story about Biscuit! ๐Ÿฑ

Here's what happened, step by step:

FIRST: Maya found a kitten under a bush in the park.

NEXT: She picked it up and wrapped it in her scarf.

THEN: She carried it home and gave it warm milk.

FINALLY: The kitten purred happily and Maya named it Biscuit.

See how each event follows the one before it? That's called sequencing! ๐Ÿ“–

1๏ธโƒฃโžก๏ธ2๏ธโƒฃโžก๏ธ3๏ธโƒฃโžก๏ธ4๏ธโƒฃ
Events in Order!
1๏ธโƒฃ FIRST โ€” what happened first?
2๏ธโƒฃ NEXT โ€” what came after?
3๏ธโƒฃ THEN โ€” what happened then?
4๏ธโƒฃ FINALLY โ€” how did it end?
๐Ÿ“– Fun Fact!
In reading challenges, you might be asked "What happened AFTER...?" or "What happened BEFORE...?" โ€” knowing the sequence helps you answer these perfectly! ๐ŸŽฏ

Skill 3

๐Ÿ” Making Inferences โ€” Reading Detective!

Now for Lexie's FAVOURITE skill โ€” making inferences! ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ

Sometimes, the author doesn't tell you EVERYTHING directly. You have to figure things out from clues in the text!

This is called reading between the lines. ๐Ÿ”

Here's the magic formula:

๐Ÿ“– What the text says + ๐Ÿง  What you already know = ๐Ÿ’ก An inference!

For example: "Sam grabbed his umbrella before leaving the house."

The text doesn't SAY it's raining... but you can infer it is! โ˜”

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ
Reading Detective Formula!
๐Ÿ“– Text clues (what it says)
โž• PLUS
๐Ÿง  Your brain (what you know)
๐Ÿ’ก = An INFERENCE!
๐Ÿ’ก Lexie's Tip!
When a question says "How can you tell...?" or "What does this suggest...?" โ€” they're asking you to make an inference! Use clues + your brain! ๐Ÿง โœจ

Skill 3

๐Ÿ” Let's Practice โ€” Inferences!

๐Ÿ“„ Read This Passage:

Lily stared at the maths test on her desk. Her hands felt sweaty and her stomach was doing flips. She looked around the room and saw everyone else already writing. Lily took a deep breath, picked up her pencil, and read the first question slowly.

๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz Time!

How was Lily probably feeling?

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ How Did You Know?
The text says "sweaty hands" and "stomach doing flips" โ€” these are clues! Combined with what you know about how people feel before tests, you can infer Lily was nervous! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ก
p.10
Skill 3

๐Ÿ”ฎ Predicting โ€” What Happens Next?

Another awesome inference skill is predicting! ๐Ÿ”ฎ

When you predict, you use clues from the story to guess what might happen next.

Good predictions are based on evidence โ€” not just random guessing!

Let's try! Read this:

"Dark clouds rolled across the sky. The wind started howling and the trees bent sideways. Mum called out from the door, 'Come inside quickly!'"

What do you think will happen next? ๐Ÿค”

You can predict that a storm is about to hit! The clues are: dark clouds, howling wind, and Mum calling to come inside.

๐Ÿ”ฎ
Prediction Power!
๐Ÿ‘€ Look for CLUES in the text
๐Ÿง  Think about what you know
๐Ÿ”ฎ Make a smart prediction
๐Ÿ“– Read on to check if you're right!
๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz Time!

"Tom put on his boots, grabbed his fishing rod, and packed sandwiches." What is Tom probably about to do?
