Did you know that English has some really tricky words? Some words don't sound the way they look, and some words sound the SAME but mean different things!

Today, I'll teach you FOUR magical spelling powers:

Vowel teams are when two vowels work together to make ONE sound! 🤝

Remember this rule: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking!"

This means the first vowel says its NAME (long sound) and the second stays quiet!

Examples:

🔹 ai → rain, paint, train

🔹 ea → teach, read, clean

🔹 oa → boat, coat, road

🔹 ee → tree, see, free

But watch out — English is sneaky! "ea" can say /e/ too: bread, head! 😅

Blends = two or three consonants that you can hear BOTH sounds:

🔹 blue, crab, strong, flag, spoon

Digraphs = two letters that make ONE new sound:

🔹 sh → ship, fish

🔹 ch → chip, church

🔹 th → think, the

🔹 wh → whale, when

🔹 ph → phone (sounds like "f"!)

Tricky digraph: "gh" can say /f/ at the end → enough, cough, laugh

You can build NEW words by adding parts to a base word! 🧱

Prefix = added to the FRONT (changes meaning)

🔹 unhappy = NOT happy

🔹 rewrite = write AGAIN

🔹 disagree = NOT agree

🔹 misspell = spell WRONGLY

Suffix = added to the END (changes word type)

🔹 hopeful = full of hope

🔹 careless = without care

🔹 teacher = one who teaches

🔹 slowly = in a slow way

Homophones are words that sound the SAME but have different spellings and meanings! 👯

These are super tricky because you can't tell the difference when you HEAR them — only when you SEE them!

Here are the most important ones to know:

🔹 their (belongs to them) / there (a place) / they're (they are)

🔹 your (belongs to you) / you're (you are)

🔹 to (direction) / too (also/very) / two (the number 2)

🔹 hear (with ears) / here (this place)

🔹 where (a place?) / wear (clothes) / we're (we are)

Some words are just sneaky! They don't follow the rules and you have to learn them by heart! 😈

Ollie's Most Tricky Words list:

🔹 because — Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants!

🔹 friend — I'll be your friEND until the END!

🔹 said — doesn't rhyme with "paid" (so sneaky!)

🔹 Wednesday — say "Wed-NES-day" in your head!

🔹 February — say "Feb-RU-ary" (don't forget the first R!)

🔹 different — has 3 syllables: dif-fer-ent!

🔹 separate — has "a RAT" in the middle! se-par-ate

Some letters in English are silent — they're there but you don't say them! 🤫

Here are the sneakiest silent letters:

🔹 Silent K: know, knife, knight, knee

🔹 Silent W: write, wrong, wrap, sword

🔹 Silent B: climb, thumb, lamb, comb

🔹 Silent G: gnat, gnome, sign

🔹 Silent H: hour, honest, ghost

The trick? When you're spelling, say the silent letter in your head! "KNIFE" → say "kuh-NIFE" quietly to remember the K! 🧠
