Today, I'll teach you FOUR magical spelling powers:

๐Ÿ”Š Phonics โ€” how letters make sounds

๐Ÿ“ Spelling Rules โ€” patterns that help you spell

๐Ÿ‘ฏ Homophones โ€” words that sound alike

Skill 1

๐Ÿ”Š Phonics โ€” Vowel Teams!

Vowel teams are when two vowels work together to make ONE sound! ๐Ÿค

Remember this rule: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking!"

This means the first vowel says its NAME (long sound) and the second stays quiet!

Examples:

๐Ÿ”น ai โ†’ rain, paint, train

๐Ÿ”น ea โ†’ teach, read, clean

๐Ÿ”น oa โ†’ boat, coat, road

๐Ÿ”น ee โ†’ tree, see, free

But watch out โ€” English is sneaky! "ea" can say /e/ too: bread, head! ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿ”Š
Vowel Teams!
๐Ÿ”น ai = long A (rain)
๐Ÿ”น ea = long E (teach)
๐Ÿ”น oa = long O (boat)
๐Ÿ”น ee = long E (tree)
๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz!

Which word has the vowel team "oa" making a long O sound?

Skill 1

๐Ÿ”Š Consonant Blends & Digraphs!

Blends = two or three consonants that you can hear BOTH sounds:

๐Ÿ”น blue, crab, strong, flag, spoon

Digraphs = two letters that make ONE new sound:

๐Ÿ”น sh โ†’ ship, fish

๐Ÿ”น ch โ†’ chip, church

๐Ÿ”น th โ†’ think, the

๐Ÿ”น wh โ†’ whale, when

๐Ÿ”น ph โ†’ phone (sounds like "f"!)

Tricky digraph: "gh" can say /f/ at the end โ†’ enough, cough, laugh

๐Ÿค
Blends vs Digraphs
๐Ÿ”Š Blends: hear BOTH sounds
๐Ÿ”— Digraphs: ONE new sound
๐Ÿ“ž ph = /f/ (phone)
๐Ÿ˜ค gh = /f/ (enough, laugh)
๐Ÿ’ก Ollie's Tip!
If you see "ph" in a word, it almost ALWAYS sounds like "f"! Phone, photo, elephant, dolphin โ€” they all have the "ph = f" pattern! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฌ

๐Ÿ“ Spelling Rules โ€” Magic Patterns!

English spelling has some magical rules that work most of the time! Learn these and you'll spell like a wizard! ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Magic ESilent E makes the vowel say its namehop โ†’ hope, kit โ†’ kite
Double RuleDouble the last letter before adding -ing/-ed (if short vowel + consonant)run โ†’ running, hop โ†’ hopped

Skill 2

๐Ÿ”ง Prefixes & Suffixes โ€” Word Building!

You can build NEW words by adding parts to a base word! ๐Ÿงฑ

Prefix = added to the FRONT (changes meaning)

๐Ÿ”น unhappy = NOT happy

๐Ÿ”น rewrite = write AGAIN

๐Ÿ”น disagree = NOT agree

๐Ÿ”น misspell = spell WRONGLY

Suffix = added to the END (changes word type)

๐Ÿ”น hopeful = full of hope

๐Ÿ”น careless = without care

๐Ÿ”น teacher = one who teaches

๐Ÿ”น slowly = in a slow way

๐Ÿ”ง๐Ÿงฑ
Word Building Blocks!
โฌ…๏ธ Prefix = FRONT (un-, re-, dis-)
โžก๏ธ Suffix = END (-ful, -less, -er)
๐ŸŽฏ Base word = the middle part
๐Ÿ”ข prefix + base + suffix = new word!
๐Ÿ“– Fun Fact!
Challenge questions often test whether you know what prefixes and suffixes mean. If you see "un-" it almost always means "NOT"! Unhappy, unable, unfair, unusual โ€” they ALL mean "not" something! ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿ‘ฏ Homophones โ€” Sound-Alike Twins!

Homophones are words that sound the SAME but have different spellings and meanings! ๐Ÿ‘ฏ

These are super tricky because you can't tell the difference when you HEAR them โ€” only when you SEE them!

Here are the most important ones to know:

๐Ÿ”น their (belongs to them) / there (a place) / they're (they are)

๐Ÿ”น your (belongs to you) / you're (you are)

๐Ÿ”น to (direction) / too (also/very) / two (the number 2)

๐Ÿ”น hear (with ears) / here (this place)

๐Ÿ”น where (a place?) / wear (clothes) / we're (we are)

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Tricky Words โ€” The Sneaky Spellers!

Some words are just sneaky! They don't follow the rules and you have to learn them by heart! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Ollie's Most Tricky Words list:

๐Ÿ”น because โ€” Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants!

๐Ÿ”น friend โ€” I'll be your friEND until the END!

๐Ÿ”น said โ€” doesn't rhyme with "paid" (so sneaky!)

๐Ÿ”น Wednesday โ€” say "Wed-NES-day" in your head!

๐Ÿ”น February โ€” say "Feb-RU-ary" (don't forget the first R!)

๐Ÿ”น different โ€” has 3 syllables: dif-fer-ent!

๐Ÿ”น separate โ€” has "a RAT" in the middle! se-par-ate

๐Ÿ˜ˆ

๐Ÿคซ Silent Letters โ€” Shhh!

Some letters in English are silent โ€” they're there but you don't say them! ๐Ÿคซ

Here are the sneakiest silent letters:

๐Ÿ”น Silent K: know, knife, knight, knee

๐Ÿ”น Silent W: write, wrong, wrap, sword

๐Ÿ”น Silent B: climb, thumb, lamb, comb

๐Ÿ”น Silent G: gnat, gnome, sign

๐Ÿ”น Silent H: hour, honest, ghost

The trick? When you're spelling, say the silent letter in your head! "KNIFE" โ†’ say "kuh-NIFE" quietly to remember the K! ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿคซ
Silent Letter Club!
๐Ÿ”‡ K is silent before N (know)
๐Ÿ”‡ W is silent before R (write)
๐Ÿ”‡ B is silent after M (climb)
๐Ÿ”‡ Say them in your HEAD!
๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz!

Bonus!

๐Ÿ”€ Commonly Confused Words!

These aren't homophones โ€” but kids mix them up ALL the time! Let's fix that! ๐Ÿ”ง

Word 1Word 2How to Remember
than (comparing)then (time/after)thAN = compAring; thEN = whEN
were (past of "are")where (a place?)WHERE has "here" = place
quite (rather)quiet (no noise)quiET has "ET" like shh!
its (belongs to it)it's (it is)Apostrophe = "it is" squeezed
ofoffOFF has 2 f's = falling OFF!
noknowKNOW has silent K (knowledge)
๐Ÿ“– Spelling Alert!
Spelling challenges often include these tricky pairs! If you see "its" vs "it's" โ€” remember: apostrophe = "it is". If you can replace it with "it is" and it makes sense, use the one with the apostrophe!
