On this train ride we will stop at five stations:

๐Ÿš‰ Sentence Station

๐Ÿš‰ Combining Corner

๐Ÿš‰ Paragraph Place

๐Ÿš‰ Cohesion Crossing

๐Ÿš‰ Proofreading Platform

Keep your editor eyes open. Tiny fixes can make a huge difference! โœจ

๐Ÿ“ Sentence Check

Every sentence needs to make sense on its own.

A strong sentence usually has a who and a what happened.

Editors check for:

๐Ÿ”น complete thoughts

๐Ÿ”น capital letters at the start

๐Ÿ”น punctuation at the end

๐Ÿ”น no repeated boring sentence openings

Edit Example

went to the park

Mia went to the park.

๐Ÿ”  Start with a capital
๐Ÿ›‘ End with punctuation

Station 2

๐Ÿ”— Combining Sentences

Short sentences are useful, but too many can sound choppy.

Editors combine ideas with words like and, but, because, when, and so.

Edit Example

The rain started. We ran inside.

When the rain started, we ran inside.

Good editing uses sentence variety. Mix short, medium, and longer sentences so the writing flows.

๐Ÿ’ก because gives a reason
โฐ when shows time
Railway Reminder
A writer who starts every sentence the same way can sound bumpy. Varying sentence openers makes the writing glide more smoothly, like a train on clean tracks.

Station 3

๐Ÿ“š Paragraph Place

A new paragraph helps the reader notice a new idea.

Start a new paragraph when there is:

๐Ÿ”น a new topic

๐Ÿ”น a new speaker in dialogue

๐Ÿ”น a new time or place

Edit Example

Tom packed his bag. He raced to the bus stop. At school he painted a dragon.

Tom packed his bag and raced to the bus stop.

At school, he painted a dragon.

๐Ÿชข Cohesion Crossing

Cohesion means the writing sticks together smoothly.

Editors help ideas connect by using:

๐Ÿ”น linking words like first, next, meanwhile, finally

๐Ÿ”น pronouns like he, she, they, it

๐Ÿ”น repeated key words only when needed

Edit Example

Mina found a map. Mina followed the map. Mina opened a gate.

Mina found a map. Then she followed it and opened a gate.

๐Ÿ” Proofreading Platform

After editing ideas, do a final proofread.

Proofread for:

๐Ÿ”น capitals

๐Ÿ”น full stops, commas, question marks

๐Ÿ”น apostrophes

๐Ÿ”น spelling mistakes

Edit Example

yesterday we bakeed muffins, they were delicious

Yesterday, we baked muffins. They were delicious.

Read slowly. Reading aloud helps you hear missing words or awkward sentences.

๐Ÿงฐ Editor's Checklist

Run through this checklist before you finish:
โœ… Are my sentences complete?
โœ… Did I combine ideas smoothly?
โœ… Did I start new paragraphs when needed?
โœ… Do linking words and pronouns help the writing flow?
โœ… Did I proofread capitals, punctuation, and spelling?
Edie's Big Tip
Edit in layers. First fix meaning. Then fix sentence flow. Last, proofread punctuation and spelling. Trying to fix everything at once makes it harder to spot errors.
