๐Ÿ“ Story Structure โ€” The Story Mountain!

Every great story follows a pattern called the Story Mountain! ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Think of it like climbing a mountain:

1๏ธโƒฃ Orientation โ€” Introduce WHO, WHERE, WHEN

2๏ธโƒฃ Complication โ€” Something goes WRONG! (The problem!)

3๏ธโƒฃ Climax โ€” The most exciting part! (The peak!)

4๏ธโƒฃ Resolution โ€” How the problem is solved

5๏ธโƒฃ Ending โ€” How the character feels or what they learned

Without a complication, there IS no story! The problem is what makes it exciting! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ”๏ธ
The Story Mountain!
1๏ธโƒฃ Orientation (who, where, when)
2๏ธโƒฃ Complication (the problem!)
3๏ธโƒฃ Climax (most exciting part!)
4๏ธโƒฃ Resolution (problem solved)
5๏ธโƒฃ Ending (lesson or feeling)
๐Ÿ’ก Frankie's Tip!
In story writing challenges, you'll be asked to write a narrative. Having a clear structure with orientation โ†’ complication โ†’ resolution will score you great marks!

Skill 1

๐Ÿ”ฅ Sizzling Starts โ€” Hook Your Reader!

The first sentence of your story is the MOST important! It needs to grab the reader's attention right away!

Frankie's favourite tricks for a sizzling start:

๐Ÿ’ฌ Dialogue: "Run!" screamed Mia as the wave crashed behind them.

๐ŸŽฌ Action: The ground shook and the trees started to sway.

โ“ Question: Have you ever wished you could fly?

๐Ÿ˜ฑ Sound effect: CRASH! The vase smashed into a thousand pieces.

Never start with "One day..." or "My name is..." โ€” that's a Boring Beginning! ๐Ÿฅฑ

๐Ÿ”ฅ
Sizzling Start Tricks!
๐Ÿ’ฌ Start with DIALOGUE
๐ŸŽฌ Start with ACTION
โ“ Start with a QUESTION
๐Ÿ˜ฑ Start with a SOUND
โœ๏ธ Compare These!
โŒ One day I went to the beach and it was fun. โœ… "Watch out!" Dad shouted as the enormous wave raced towards us, spraying cold water everywhere. See the difference? The second one makes you want to read MORE! ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ”ฅ Let's Practice โ€” Sizzling Starts!

Which of these is the BEST opening for a story about a haunted house? ๐Ÿš๏ธ

๐Ÿง  Quick Quiz Time!
๐ŸŒŸ Why B is Best!
Option B uses a sound effect (CREAK!) and action (door swung open) โ€” two sizzling start tricks! It puts you RIGHT in the scene. The others are boring because they just TELL you what happens instead of SHOWING it.

Skill 2

๐ŸŽญ Creating Amazing Characters!

Great stories have characters that feel REAL! How do you do that?

๐Ÿ‘€ Show, Don't Tell! This is Frankie's #1 rule!

Instead of TELLING the reader how a character feels, SHOW it through their actions, words, and body language!

โŒ "Sam was scared." (Telling โ€” boring!)

โœ… "Sam's hands trembled as he peeked around the corner, his heart pounding like a drum." (Showing โ€” exciting!)

Give your characters:

๐Ÿท๏ธ A name and a detail (e.g., "curly-haired Maya")

๐Ÿ’ญ Thoughts and feelings

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Their own way of speaking

๐ŸŽญ
Show Don't Tell!
๐Ÿ‘€ SHOW through actions
๐Ÿ’ญ Give them THOUGHTS
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Let them SPEAK
๐Ÿ‘‹ Use BODY LANGUAGE
๐Ÿ’ก Frankie's Tip!
"Show Don't Tell" is the secret weapon of great writers! In writing challenges, it shows that you're a sophisticated writer. Try to use it at least 3 times in your story!

Skill 2

๐ŸŽจ Painting Words โ€” Descriptive Language!

Want to make your writing AMAZING? Use descriptive language โ€” words that paint a picture in the reader's mind! ๐ŸŽจ

Adjectives โ€” describing words (enormous, shimmering, ancient)

Similes โ€” comparing using "like" or "as" ("fast AS a cheetah", "sparkled LIKE diamonds")

Alliteration โ€” same starting sound ("slippery, slimy snake")

Onomatopoeia โ€” sound words (CRASH! WHOOSH! SIZZLE!)

Use your 5 senses! Describe what characters see, hear, smell, taste, and feel!

Which sentence uses a simile?

โœ๏ธ Sentences That Sing!

Great writers use different types of sentences to keep readers interested!

Short sentences = drama and excitement!
"She froze."

Long sentences = description and flow
"The golden sunlight streamed through the window, warming her face as the birds sang outside."

Mix them up! If all your sentences are the same length, it sounds like a robot talking! ๐Ÿค–

Also use compound sentences โ€” join two ideas with words like: and, but, so, because, however

โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ“
Sentence Variety!
โšก Short = DRAMA (She ran.)
๐ŸŒŠ Long = DESCRIPTION
๐Ÿ”€ MIX them up!
๐Ÿ”— Use joining words (but, so)
โœ๏ธ See the Difference!
โŒ I went to the park. I played on the swings. I had lunch. I went home. (boring โ€” all short!) โœ… I raced to the park and jumped on the swings, pumping my legs higher and higher until I could see over the fence. After eating my sandwiches under the old oak tree, I headed home with grass stains on my knees and a big grin on my face. Much better! Different sentence lengths = interesting writing! ๐ŸŽต

Skill 3

๐Ÿ’ฌ Writing Dialogue โ€” Let Them Talk!

Dialogue means when your characters speak! Adding dialogue makes your story come alive! ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Here are the rules:

1๏ธโƒฃ Put speech marks " " around what the character says

2๏ธโƒฃ Start a new line for each new speaker

3๏ธโƒฃ Use interesting speech verbs โ€” not just "said"!

Instead of "said", try: whispered, shouted, exclaimed, muttered, cried, laughed, replied, gasped

4๏ธโƒฃ Add actions BEFORE or AFTER the speech:

Maya bit her lip. "I don't think we should go in there," she whispered.

๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

โ†ฉ๏ธ New line = new speaker
๐Ÿ”ค Use varied speech verbs

Skill 4

๐ŸŒŸ Brilliant Endings!

The ending is what readers remember MOST! So make it brilliant! ๐ŸŒŸ

Frankie's favourite ending tricks:

๐Ÿ’ญ Reflection: The character thinks about what they learned
"As I walked home, I realised that the biggest adventures begin with the smallest steps."

๐Ÿ”„ Circle Back: Connect the ending to the beginning
(If your story started at the beach, end at the beach too!)

โ“ Cliffhanger: Leave the reader wondering!
"But when I turned around... nothing was there."

Never end with "The End." or "Then I woke up." โ€” those are boring! ๐Ÿฅฑ

๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿšซ Never "The End" or "Woke up"!

Which ending technique is this? "I looked at the old tree house one last time and smiled. We'd built it together, and even though I was moving away, the memories would stay forever."
