Welcome!

Meet Soli the Sun Guide! โ˜€๏ธ

Hello, explorer! I am Soli, and I love stories about sunlight, shadows, and old inventions.

Long before people had watches and wall clocks, they still needed to know the time.

So they looked at the Sun and the shadow it made.

Today we will learn about a clever old idea called a solar clock.

Chapter 1

What Is a Solar Clock?

A solar clock is a very old tool that uses the Sun to help show the time.

Another name for it is a sundial.

It does not tick like a modern clock.

Instead, it uses a shadow. When the Sun moves across the sky, the shadow moves too.

People watched where the shadow pointed.

History

How Did People Tell Time Long Ago?

Long ago, people did not have digital clocks, phones, or watches.

But they still needed to know when to work, eat, travel, or rest.

They looked at the sky.

In the morning, the Sun was low. In the middle of the day, it was high. Later, it moved down again.

This gave people clues about the time of day.

Step 1

The Sun Makes a Shadow

When sunlight hits an object, it can make a shadow.

If the object stands up, the shadow falls on the ground.

On a solar clock, a standing piece in the middle makes the shadow.

As the Sun moves, the shadow moves too.

That moving shadow is the important clue.

Step 2

The Shadow Moves Through the Day

In the morning, the Sun is in one part of the sky, so the shadow points one way.

Later, the Sun moves higher, and the shadow changes.

By the middle of the day, the shadow is shorter.

Later in the day, the shadow stretches in another direction.

That is how the solar clock gives time clues.

Parts of a Simple Sundial

A simple sundial has two main parts.

First, it has a standing piece that makes the shadow.

Second, it has a flat surface where the shadow falls.

Some sundials also have marks or lines to help show parts of the day.

The shadow moves across those marks.

Science Note

When Did It Work Best?

A solar clock works best when the Sun is shining clearly.

If it is night, there is no sunlight.

If it is very cloudy, the shadow may be hard to see.

That means a solar clock is useful in daylight, but not in every kind of weather.

Compare

Solar Clock vs Modern Clock

A solar clock uses sunlight and shadow.

A modern clock uses moving hands, gears, batteries, or electronics.

Both help people know the time.

But a modern clock can show time more exactly and can work indoors too.

How People Used It

People used solar clocks to help plan the day.

They could use them to know when it was time to start work, rest, or meet others.

It was not always exact like a modern clock, but it was very helpful.

It gave people a smart way to measure the day using nature.
